This is a short list of our most frequently asked questions. They are designed to provide a better understanding of Microdive online course training. Click on a question below to reveal the answer.

How old do I have to be to start the course?

You will have to be at least 10 years of age to participate in Microdive courses.

However, qualified Microdive divers between the age of 10 and 15 years of age will be qualified as a junior Microdive divers and must be accompanied by a diving professional or adult qualified as a Microdive diver or equivalent when diving. Junior Microdive diver cards will be updated to an adult rating at 16 years of age.

What do I need in order to access the online courses?

You will need a good internet connection and a PC, laptop, or tablet. It will be handy if you have good quality external speakers, as some pages in the on-line course contain video clips.

With the video clips, you will need to have a high-speed connection to the internet (via broadband or adsl).  If you have a dial-up connection, you can still take the course (although you may want to skip watching the videos). All the need-to-know information is provided in a non-video format as well.

Are there any prerequisites to take the Microdive 5 or 9 metres online course?

There are no prerequisites to take the 5 or  9 metres. You can basically start with either as your entry level to scuba diving.

The 5 metres course takes 1 day to complete. And the 9 metres takes 2 days to complete (the time scale mentioned here is dependent on your arrangements with your instructor).

Once you successfully complete either course, you will be awarded a permanent qualification card to dive anywhere in the world down to the maximum depth you are trained to.

Are there anymore cost other than the online fee?

Your online fee only covers your academic portion of the course, payable when you register online at

You will need to pay your local dive centre for the additional in-water skills assessment, for the surface and underwater, as well as your qualifying dives. Certification is only awarded once 2 x 30 minutes dives (for the Explorer Course) or 3 x 30 minutes dives (for the Open Water Course) have been completed.

Once the above phases have been completed, your instructor will order your permanent certification card from Microdive.

What equipment will I need to take the course?

Usually, your local dive centre will provide you with all necessary equipment, as part of your course, while you are on a training session. and after you qualify, you can then either hire or purchase your own diving equipment.

There 2 types of diving equipment available for you to choose from:

  • Traditional scuba equipment, which consist of a BCD (wrap around Buoyancy Control Device or wing system), comes in different sizes and to which you attach the cylinder, regulator hoses and gauges.
  • The Mini B Integrated system, which takes the form of a rucksack, is an integrated system where cylinder, regulator hoses and gauges are housed discreetly inside, stays assembled, and comes with one size fits all harness.

Can I really get certified to dive on line?

Online access to scuba courses provide you with the academic knowledge you need to know before you can progress further to practice both the surface and underwater skills. 

To become scuba diver qualified, you will need to get in the water with a qualified instructor, to develop and practice underwater skills.

Microdive online courses eliminate the need to spend valuable time in a classroom, going through academic material. This way, you can learn on your own, at your own pace and when it is most convenient for you, anywhere where there is internet access.

Once I am certified with Microdive, do I need to dive with a dive supervisor?

The beauty of the Microdive qualification to either 5 or 9 metres is that once you are qualified at your chosen depth, you can then dive independently without any dive supervisor. Something that is unique to Microdive Scuba Agency and which is not currently offered by any other major scuba body.

Although, we do recommend that you adhere to a buddy system in diving, that is, you always dive with a partner who is qualified at your level or higher.

Microdive Scuba Agency does NOT recommend solo diving.

How do I register and make payment for online courses?

You will need to visit this page  and choose your course. You then need to fill in the rest of the form.

After you submit the filled in form, you will be redirected to Paypal, where you can make your secure payment.

Once your payment has been accepted, you will receive an e-mail with your Username, Password credentilas, and your chosen course link. Then, you just simply click on the link you received in your e-mail, and login.

What do I get at the end of the online course?

When you successfully complete all the academic portion of the Microdive online course, and pass the quiz, you will be awarded a certificate of completion. You can then print or save it on your hand held device to present to your instructor who will be conducting your surface and underwater skills, as well as the open water qualifying dives.

Are there any session time out built in into the online course?

As a precaution, there is a 20 minute session built into the course. which means that If you are idle for more than 20 minutes, the system will log you out and you will need to log back in to continue your training.

What software do I need to have installed on my computer before I start the course??

All our videos are streamed either via YouTube or Vimeo, so you do not need any special software to run these.

On some topics, there might be a suggestion for further reading which include a PDF. In this case, you will need to have the latest version of Adobe Acrobat Reader installed which you can download for free from
